The Benefits of Landscape Architecture on Health & Wellbeing

The Benefits of Landscape Architecture on Health & Wellbeing Written by: Rachel Washington There are many ways that landscape architecture can contribute to improving our health and well-being. For example, designing green spaces that not only look beautiful but also provide opportunities for physical activity and social interaction can help us stay active and connected to others. In urban areas, landscape architecture can help mitigate the effects of air and noise pollution by introducing more vegetation and greenery. This can have a positive impact on our respiratory health and reduce stress levels. Landscape architecture can also help support mental health by creating spaces that promote relaxation, meditation, and mindfulness. Features such as water features, natural textures and scents, and quiet seating areas can all contribute to a calming and peaceful environment. Designing with nature also means taking into account the natural systems and processes that exist in a given environment. This can include incorporating sustainable practices such as rainwater harvesting, composting, and using native plant species to support local ecosystems. Overall, landscape architecture has a critical role to play in improving our health and well-being. By designing with nature, we can create spaces that are not only beautiful but also functional, sustainable, and supportive of our physical, mental, and emotional health. Matthews | DCCM Supports the Southeast ASCE Student Symposium

Matthews | DCCM Supports the Southeast ASCE Student Symposium This year we were honored to become a sponsor of the ASCE Southeast Student Symposium! The ASCE Symposium takes place annually and includes competitions, professional and personal development opportunities, networking, and of course fun, as a celebration of civil engineering and the ASCE community.  Matthews | DCCM was a Gold level sponsor of this year’s competition, which took place on UNF’s campus. Our team, comprised of Branden Marcinell, Project Manager, Tom Bartlett, Project Engineer, and Sydney Morin, college intern and ASCE member, ran the Plans Reading competition. This competition challenges the Student Chapter’s ability to read and interpret various sets of engineering and construction plans. Points were awarded for each correct answer, and the placement of the competing teams was based on the highest number of correct answers received in the shortest amount of time. Our team put these students’ skills to the test with a  challenging 100-page plan set. Congratulations to all of the teams who competed! We also had the opportunity to showcase at the Employer Exhibit. Our marketing team, Rachel Washington and Kristy Buttermore, ran the booth. We met a lot of amazing students and had a great time connecting with the other companies. Thank you ASCE for this amazing opportunity! Interested in interning with us?
